Upon arrival in Johannesburg, connect onto the scheduled flight to Maun, Botswana. Upon arrival in Maun, you will be met and assisted onto the scheduled charter flight to the Okavango Delta. Upon arrival you will be met and transferred to Pelo Camp where you will stay for three nights. Arrive in time for an afternoon activity.

The word Pelo in Setswana means ‘heart’ – a fitting name inspired by the distinct heart-shaped island on which the camp is built in the heart of the Jao Concession. This is the Delta as it is meant to be enjoyed – remote, genuine, and wild.

Pelo Camp lies in a true wetland area of the Okavango Delta, an ideal habitat for the elusive sitatunga antelope and common red lechwe. Hippo and crocodile are also regularly sighted. In the dry season lechwe, impala, elephant are prevalent, with lion, leopard and buffalo sighted occasionally. Birdlife is exceptional with the largest concentrations of Endangered wattled crane found here as well as slaty egrets, rosy-throated longclaws, African skimmer and Pel’s fishing-owl.

Given Pelo Camp’s situation on an island surrounded by permanent water, activities focus on water activities as well as walking. Glide seamlessly along the waterways of Pelo in a mokoro (a traditional dugout canoe) and take in the abundance of water-loving wildlife and birds. Trips in a 12-seater boat allow for good wildlife viewing in the channels of the Delta further away. Lookout for red lechwe and elephant and maybe even catch a glimpse of spotted-necked otter. Take a walk on one of a number of low sandy islands and learn about the River Bushman way of life in this area. Fishing, with a limited supply of basic equipment (spinner rods and a small range of lures), is on offer seasonally on a catch-and-release basis.

After the morning activity and breakfast, you will be transferred to the airstrip for the scheduled charter flight to the Linyanti region. Upon arrival you will be met and transferred to Savuti Camp where you will stay for three nights. Arrive in time for lunch and an afternoon activity.

Savuti Camp is situated in the private Linyanti Concession along the Savute Channel, famous as a sporadic and unusual watercourse. For many years the channel was dry, before the waters returned in 2008 and abundant game congregated around and adapted to their new surroundings. As part of a natural cycle, the channel is dry once more, resulting in a rich feeding ground and corridor between the surrounding mopane woodlands for both plains game and predators.

The Linyanti has diverse and prolific wildlife, but is most noted for its very large elephant population which can reach enormous densities during the dry winter months. Other game concentrations are also high, and apart from abundant plains game, species such as roan and sable antelope, giraffe, lion, leopard, cheetah, spotted hyaena, black-backed jackal and wild dog may also be encountered. This area can also be excellent for the rarely-seen aardvark and aardwolf. Birding is spectacular.

Due to our location on the Savute Channel and in the Linyanti Concession, Savuti has spectacular wildlife viewing opportunities. Game viewing tops the agenda here. Morning and afternoon game drives reveal the rich wildlife of the area where predators and elephant are often the highlight. Plains game and the diverse birdlife also offer fantastic sightings. The open 4×4 Land Rovers each accommodating a maximum of seven people, allowing each guest a ‘window’ seat. Night drives with spotlights allow you to find those nocturnal animals you wouldn’t see during the day. These often include the lesser bushbaby, spring hare, aardwolf, serval, large spotted genet and, if you are extremely lucky, the elusive pangolin!

On request and subject to the availability of a qualified walking guide, nature walks with skilled, armed guides are wonderful ways of getting close to nature and observing the smaller details you miss when traveling by vehicle. The Savuti hide is an elevated platform from which to view and photograph animals and birds. Sleep-outs are also possible here, as it is easily converted to a star bed with bed rolls, mosquito nets and a long-drop toilet.

Exploring the waters by boat can be undertaken in the morning, during midday, or as an afternoon activity. Note that boating is a seasonal activity, dependent on water levels. Water-level dependent, fishing with a limited supply of basic equipment is on offer seasonally on a catch-and-release basis. With the Linyanti Concession being an internationally recognized Important Bird Area (IBA), birding is understandably outstanding at Savuti Camp, from slaty egret in the water to kori bustard in the dry areas.

After the morning activity and breakfast, you will be transferred to the airstrip for the scheduled charter flight to Kasane Airport. From here you will be transferred by road to Victoria Falls where you will stay at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge for two nights.

Built on a plateau overlooking the Zambezi National Park, Victoria Falls Safari Lodge is just 4 km from the majestic Victoria Falls and offers a unique wildlife experience. Built of thatch and timber, the lodge rises several levels, giving the impression of a vast open-plan tree house. Our rooms all have private balconies, most of which overlook a central waterhole, offering the opportunity to observe herds of buffalo, elephant and kudu, as the sun goes down, and hyenas later in the evening. Dining options include the a la carte Makuwa-Kuwa Restaurant, the more casual Buffalo Bar and The Boma – Dinner & Drum Show.

Your day is at leisure to explore on your own. The hotel provides a complimentary scheduled transfer to and from Victoria Falls itself and the town. Or if you prefer a guided experience, you can book an optional tour (additional charge).

Victoria Falls, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the largest curtain of falling water in the world, can be enjoyed from the Zimbabwean side of the Falls 365 days of the year. On a guided tour you will be accompanied through the Rainforest by a qualified guide who will give a brief history of the Falls, as well as detailing the flora, fauna and other points of interest. Stop at lookout points along the way to marvel at one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

SUNSET CRUISE (Optional extra)

Sit back, relax and soak up the last rays of the African sun as you gently drift along the Zambezi River above the Falls with a gin and tonic in hand and enjoying delicious snacks. Look out for elephant, hippo, crocodile, magnificent birds and other wildlife. The finale of the cruise is the unforgettable sight of the sun setting over the Zambezi River, turning the sky into a myriad of reds, oranges and pinks and casting shadows and silhouettes all around.

GAME DRIVES (Optional extra)

There is no better way to explore the African bush than on a guided game drive in an open safari vehicle. We offer drives in the early morning and late afternoon, allowing you to choose to do this activity when it best suits your itinerary. As well as numerous bird species, wildlife that may be seen on the game drive, taken through Zambezi National Park, includes elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, waterbuck and other antelope.

Sign up for an unrivaled and breath-taking bird’s-eye view of the majestic Victoria Falls and surrounding areas. There are three different types of flights that depart regularly throughout the day – a 15-minute flight takes you above the Victoria Falls, a 22-minute flight also takes you over Batoka Gorge and the Zambezi River, while a 25-minute flight includes game viewing opportunities over the Zambezi National Park.

WHITE WATER RAFTING (Optional extra)

Arguably the wildest white water in the world, rafting the mighty Zambezi River is the ultimate adrenaline rush. The Zambezi rapids are officially defined as Grade 5 (Grade 6 being commercially un-runnable). The rafting experience begins at 7am when you are collected from your hotel. Save some energy for the steep walk out of the gorge at the end of an action-packed morning, where an ice cold coke or beer and a well-earned lunch awaits you.
