Day 3

After breakfast, you will descend into the Ngorongoro Crater.

Descend into the 100-square-mile Ngorongoro Crater to view game on the vast grasslands of the crater floor. This magnificent natural amphitheater is said to have the largest concentration of animals in all of Africa, including a high density of lions and thousands of flamingos. The ever-changing mood of this great amphitheater will hold your attention every second.

Formed by the collapsed cone of a Great Rift Valley volcano some three million years ago, the Ngorongoro Crater is a spectacular natural sanctuary to more than 30,000 animals. More than 350 species of birds have been recorded. Its steep, unbroken rim plunges 2,000 feet to a 102 square mile floor. It is known as the Eighth Wonder of the World.  Its vastness and beauty are truly overwhelming. Many scientists suggest that before its eruption, this volcano was larger than Mt. Kilimanjaro.

The crater contains a variety of ecosystems and an astounding concentration of birds and animals. Encounter massive herds of zebra, wildebeest, and gazelles. This area affords an opportunity to spot the Big Five, which includes African elephant, leopard, the black-mane lion, buffalo, and the rare black rhinoceros.

Day 5 – 7

Enjoy three full days at Taasa.

During certain months of the year the migratory herds of wildebeest and zebra make for one of the natural world’s most spectacular sights. River crossings, especially, are not to be missed. After dithering back and forth on the banks one brave wildebeest jumps in, with hundreds following behind. The migration is a phenomenon that must be seen to be believed. You’ll be mesmerized by the sights and sounds of the natural world at its most impressive.   Taasa is ideally situated for the Northern Serengeti migration towards the Mara River.

NIGHT DRIVES

Load into our open-sided Toyota Land Cruiser with warm blankets and head out in the dark of night under starlit skies. The experience of a game drive at night is very different from one during the day and you may see striped hyena on the prowl or lions on hunt. Your Maasai guide will be in his tracker’s chair mounted on the vehicle front with his floodlight sweeping for reflective eyes of predators. One never knows what will be lurking in the dark, but it is guaranteed to be electrifying and totally unlike your daytime game drives.

WALKING SAFARIS

Walking in the bush, surrounded by all the sights, sounds and smells of Africa is completely different and more personal experience than a drive in a Safari vehicle. Learn about medicinal plants, how to start a fire with sticks, and the wildlife you might encounter.

BALLOON SAFARIS

Experience the expanse of the Serengeti from above on a magical balloon safari. This incredible experience is available from the Lobo area operated by Adventures Aloft Serengeti. Their two A415 balloons from Cameroon Balloons have a flying capacity of 16 passengers.

MAASAI VILLAGE

The Maasai are among the best known of African tribes due to their adherence of distinctive customs and dress. Whereas many of the Maasai bomas found in the Northern Tanzanian Safari circuit are geared entirely towards visiting tourists, the Maasai of Ololosokwan remain unaffected by large scale tourism and are therefore always enthusiastic about sharing their cultural beliefs with the few visitors they receive. A visit among the local people of Tanzania can easily become one of the most rewarding experiences of a visit to Africa.

The coral reefs surrounding Mnemba island are home to a vast variety of reef fish, anemone and other marine specimens, while diverse pelagic fish and marine mammals thrive in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Mnemba Island has a fully stocked Dive Centre, and offers a full range of diving activities. A variety of diving courses are also available (additional costs apply). If you are a beginner, our Instructor is waiting to introduce you to a whole new world of mystery, wonder and beauty!

Snorkelling is ideal for those who do not wish to do a scuba diving accreditation but who want to confidently explore the shallower coral reefs, situated off Mnemba Island, with the help of a snorkel. A guided snorkelling course is also available at an additional cost, offered by andBeyond’s Mnemba Island specialist dive masters, and covers safety procedures, equipment, currents and suggested snorkelling spots.

Explore the warm Indian Ocean waves in utter tranquillity in a deep sea kayak built for two. Ask one of Mnemba’s Dive Instructors for a quick tutorial session or set off with your partner on the quiet waters protected by the island’s surrounding reefs. Paddle along the beach to admire the changing features of the shoreline or head out into deeper waters in the hope of encountering a pod of dolphin or some sea turtles.

Pick up the elegant rhythm of the fly-fisherman as you enjoy the challenge of targeting a multitude of fish species off the soft, white beaches of &Beyond Mnemba Island. Fishing is usually done from the northern point of the island and fishermen are encouraged to release their quarry once they have savoured the thrill of the fight. Our instructors can give you pointers on your casting, while fly rods and tackle are available on the island.

Enjoy an unforgettable experience on the calm Indian Ocean waters on a stand up paddle board. Get a few tips from our expert instructors before grabbing paddle in hand and mounting the board to head out into the waves. Ideal for the calm waters off Mnemba Island, this activity allows you to glide effortlessly through the waves while enjoying exceptional views of the ocean waters and the Mnemba horizon. Watch as dolphin frolic nearby, play in the waves and guide yourself through graceful turns.

It’s a battle of wills as guests test their strength against barracuda, mackerel, king fish and marlin on a full day, deep sea fishing adventure. Available at an additional cost.
