An early morning call at 6:00 am heralds a new day in Africa’s most exciting game reserve. After a light snack, your early morning game drive allows you to explore the magnificence nature. On return to the camp a hearty brunch is served. Spend the morning relaxing by the pool or in the Discovery Room. Following high tea in the late afternoon, you set off again in search of game. Round off another perfect day at Mashatu with a delicious dinner at the camp, and the companionship of your fellow guests and the Mashatu hospitality staff. Allow the memories of your day’s game viewing to lull you off to dreamland when you fall into bed, tired but contented.

Activities that can be booked at an additional cost include: horseback safaris, mountain bike safaris, walking safaris, local village visit, hide experiences. It is suggested that you book these activities in advance.

This morning after breakfast you will head to the Mashatu photographic hide for an incredible up close and personal game viewing activity. The photographic hide will be booked exclusively for your family (subject to availability).

Sit quietly and watch animals moving directly towards you, all the while taking pictures from unique angles, resulting in unique and exceptional quality photography. Mashatu is a semi-arid area, which means that animals are attracted to water in the dry season (June – October). This makes it an excellent location where animals literally come to you!

Photographic hides are structures built to maximize the photographic potential of the animal subjects that visit them. These hides can be used to view wildlife in the normal manner but have been positioned with consideration of the angle of the sun, the background and the angle the viewer occupies in relation to the animals and birds.

A professional wildlife photographer will accompany participants to the hides. They are on hand to tutor both aspiring and experienced photographers in camera techniques which will see a vast improvement in the quality of their images. You may use the hides for normal game viewing purposes as well as for photography. You will be accompanied by the photographic guide or a ranger from Mashatu Game Reserve.

Historic trek to Rhodes’ grave and “View of the World”: Drive through the granite hills in the footsteps of Cecil John Rhodes. Visit his world famous tomb known as “View of the World”, it’s an historical experience not to be forgotten. his “dwala” is known as “the dwelling place of spirits” or rather “Amalindidzimu” and the view will leave you breathless.

Walks to world renowned caves and bushman paintings: Explore the hills where mysterious nomads once held their sacred ceremonies. The rocky granite topography boasts more than 2000 sites of the San (Bushman) tribes and is probably the richest source of San rock art known. This area, and several famous rocks here – known to the Ndebele people – hold spiritual significance of bygone rituals. Here, you can learn about their trials and tribulations, hopes and aspirations.

Game drives into the National Park: The Matopos region has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to the highest concentration of rock art in southern Africa. Some of the prolific species include the black eagle and rock hyrax.

Rhino walks (own account) can be done on vehicle or on foot.

After breakfast and a morning game drive you will be met and transferred to Khulu Bush Camp where you will stay for three nights.

Arrive in time for lunch and an afternoon activity.

Khulu Bush Camp is the smaller, more intimate sister lodge to its neighbouring Ivory Lodge. The excellent accessibility does not take away from its unparalleled feeling of seclusion and remoteness in the true African wilderness. Khulu Bush Camp is a tribute to Cedric Wilde, one of the Directors of the Amalinda Safari Collection, who it is named after. Khulu is the community and staff’s affectionate name for Cedric and it means ‘grandfather’. If you are lucky enough to be in camp with Khulu himself your evenings will be spent around the fire, talking of days gone by and strumming to old country tunes.

The beauty of this camp is that it combines luxurious and private accommodation with old world hospitality. Khulu overlooks an ancient riverbed, in today’s terms called a ‘vlei’, known to attract a variety of the greatest wildlife and bird life in Hwange National Park, right on your doorstep.

Early morning game drives set out at the crack of dawn with our licensed guides, both into the National park and their own 6000 acre concession. Mornings are usually productive, with plenty of hyena and wilddog as well as the other plains game. Afternoon and evening drives in the same area leave at 3:00pm and return with spotting torch by night. Animals and birds seen in the afternoons are prolific with sometimes close encounters with the majestic Presidential Elephant Heard.

Walking safaris include approaching big herds and cats, an exciting chance to get up close and personal with the small and large creatures of the park.

There is also the opportunity to go on a Dete Cultural Tour or relax for a Pan Sit at the lodge.

After breakfast and a morning game drive, you will be collected from your lodge for your transfer to the airport for your flight home, taking the sights, sounds, and memories of an incredible safari, home with you!
