Hwange National Park is Zimbabwe’s biggest reserve, home to a profusion of wildlife, including giraffe, lion, zebra and approximately 40 000 elephants. It provides sanctuary for all the country’s endangered species, including a population of wild dogs thought to be among the most sizeable surviving groups on the continent. Terrain ranges from desert dunes and savannah lands to rocky outcrops and sparse forests, and visitors have the choice of game drives, guided walks or horseback safaris as a means of experiencing the park and its creatures.
Hwange was once the royal hunting ground of Ndebele kings and has long been known for its abundant and diverse wildlife. In particular, the park is known for herds of elephant and buffalo numbering in the hundreds. This is one of the best places to see lion, leopard and African wild dog among the hundred or so other mammal and four hundred bird species.
The Hide Safari Camp is fortunate to have the best of both worlds. While located within the Hwange National Park, it is also surrounded by a private concession which allows us to offer activities not otherwise permitted. Hwange is a vast playground worth exploring so you don’t have to worry about being bored.
Early morning walks are there for the thrill of encountering wildlife on its own terms and exploring the little surprises of the bush. Return after a morning walk to a spread of fresh fruit, pastries and a farmhouse breakfast. Sitting down to freshly brewed coffee and sharing the morning’s sightings and plans for the rest of the day is all part of the safari experience.
The rest of the day can be spent further afield on game drives in search of predators and prey alike. Sundowners are an important part of the experience. Enjoy the natural beauty with a cold drink in hand.

Rugged mountains, springs and streams, Miomba woodlands and Mopane scrublands, pristine riverine vegetation, crystal clear lake water and grass flanked shoreline all combine to create a unique habitat for healthy populations of African mammals. Elephants, who have adapted to a semi aquatic lifestyle, frequent the shoreline as do numerous species of antelope, their feeding patterns governed by the ever-changing lake levels. Lion, leopard, hyena and cheetah occur in good numbers and a few, very endangered black rhino are present.
A typical day in the camp starts early to coincide with the best times to view animals. Continental breakfast ‘al fresco’ is served on the deck or on the beach before your morning activity, which could be a game drive, boating, fishing or a walk. Then, just before it gets too hot, you’ll be back in camp for a delicious brunch, allowing you to siesta during the heat of the day. Make yourselves at home, enjoy the cool breeze in the lounge, recline by the pool, or relax on a hammock. Re-charge with ‘high-tea’ at 3.30pm before you venture out on your chosen afternoon activity.
Dinner is a relaxed affair set around a large table in the dining mess or under the stars on our wooden deck. For those needing a bit of time out, private dining can be organized and we love to make a fuss. No dining experience is ever the same at Changa and sometimes you might find yourself enjoying a traditional meal set around a campfire on the sandy beach in front of the camp.

This is Zanzibar, a brilliantly faceted island of narrow cobbled alleyways, where elderly men wear kanzu and sit on stone benches playing a ceaseless game of bao and young children chase balls through the streets as their mothers, veiled in their flowing black bui bui pause to share the latest gossip.
