Kimondo is a traveler, forever following the herds as they migrate across the plains of the Serengeti. From the dramatic Lamai Wedge and Mara River during winter, to the lush grasslands of the southern Serengeti at the height of summer, the eco-friendly Kimondo leaves little trace on the earth as it follows the wildebeest.

Wildlife viewing and bird watching game drives are offered twice per day. Experienced guides encourage guests to see and experience the Serengeti through their eyes, sharing a world of small and large wonders that only they truly know and understand. Guests can arrange full days in the bush with picnic lunches or shorter excursions returning to enjoy the tranquility of camp.

After breakfast, you descend with a picnic lunch through the early morning mists and 2,000 feet into the crater. Ngorongoro Crater is the World’s largest intact volcanic caldera. Due to its size and diversity, the crater floor is comprised of several distinct areas, ranging from forest, swamps, lakes and springs, to open grassland and some sandy dunes. It’s an awesome wildlife experience. A picnic lunch is served overlooking a small lake populated with hippos. You will return to the lodge in the late afternoon.

Day 10

Enjoy two full days of game viewing activities at Oliver’s Camp.

Oliver’s Camp is situated in the remote south-eastern reaches of the Tarangire National Park. This relatively undeveloped park – celebrated by safari travellers looking to head a little off the beaten track – offers a welcome respite from the crowds of the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater to the north. Oliver’s is perfectly situated to ensure a year-round Tanzania safari experience as each passing season paints Tarangire in vibrant new colors.

Tarangire boasts large herds of elephant and buffalo, plus a large concentration of big cats and arguably the best bird diversity in East Africa with more than 500 species. But there’s more to Tarangire than the game and birds. This rugged landscape offers a unique safari backdrop that transforms from rolling grasslands and vibrant swamps to forests of enigmatic baobab trees; according to legend, planted ‘upside down’ for growing too tall and proud.

Morning, afternoon and night game drives are done within the park. Walking safaris are a specialty of Oliver’s Camp. The privilege of walking in these natural areas gives you an exhilarating feeling of adventure. Although you’ll usually get close to large mammals such as elephant, giraffe, buffalo or even lion, walking safaris are very safe. Guests can also book a fly camping experience which is typically booked as part of a walking safari or as an exclusive and private night away from the main camp. This small and intimate lightweight camp is a fantastic experience for those seeking something a little more adventurous (additional cost).

Time permitting, arrive in time for lunch and an afternoon activity.

thumbnail

Day 13

Enjoy two full days of game viewing activities at Olakira Camp.

The Serengeti together with Kenya’s Masai Mara Game Park form Africa’s most famous wildlife park. The image of acacia trees on an endless grass plain epitomizes Africa for many, and then add a Masai warrior and some cattle to the picture and the conversation need go no further.

Tanzania’s famous migration is a restless thing: shifting with the seasons as the great herds of wildebeest wander between Kenya and Tanzania. And moving with them are the Olakira camps… as the migration progresses, so the camp’s luxury tents pick up their feet and follow. In the dry months of winter Olakira Mara River enjoys some of the best views of the herds migrating out of Kenya across the treacherous Mara River. By November, with the herds on the march, Olakira swiftly follows to witness the incredible calving in the great grassy plains of the southern Serengeti.

Wildlife viewing and bird watching game drives are offered twice per day. Experienced guides encourage guests to see and experience the Serengeti through their eyes, sharing a world of small and large wonders that only they truly know and understand. Guests can arrange full days in the bush with picnic lunches at an additional cost.

The annual Serengeti Wildebeest Migration is, quite simply, a drama in two acts: the dramatic dash for freedom as the herds cross the deadly Mara River on their march from Kenya, and the remarkable months of calving in the lush grasslands of the south. And with Olakira Camp itself migrating twice per year, you’ll always have a front-row seat to the action.

Time permitting, arrive in time for lunch and an afternoon activity.

thumbnail

Day 16

Enjoy two full days of game viewing activities at Serengeti Pioneer Camp.

Located in South Central Serengeti – Tanzania – (within the Moru Kopjes area), Serengeti Pioneer Camp is ideally situated to offer superlative access to the annual migration and the ‘Big 5’ with sweeping views overlooking Moru Kopjes, Lake Magadi and the endless plains.

This area is dominated by the vast and seemingly endless short grass plains, stretching southwards from Naabi Hill farther than the eye can see – towards the extinct volcanoes of the Ngorongoro Highlands directly south, the Maswa woodlands in the south west and the dramatic Gol Mountains and open plains of Loliondo to the south east and east respectively.

After the area has dried out, and the migration herds have moved north, large numbers of gazelles will continue to hang around on the plains, and they in turn keep the cheetah here. Lion and even leopard are never far away, but by June you always have to work a little harder to see predators in this area, after the green months of plenty. Even as the plains start drying out, there’s a good chance of decent elephant sightings in the woodland and cheetah around the edges and we quite often see the smaller cats such as Serval and Caracal, close to the lakes. The lakes are always sublime and in complete contrast to any other part of the Serengeti drawing large numbers of flamingos. There is always good bird life around the lakes and in the woodland it is superb.

The Ngorongoro Crater is often called ‘Africa’s Eden’ and the ‘8th Natural Wonder of the World. As the largest unbroken un-flooded caldera in the world the Ngorongoro Crater is 19km long by 16km wide by 1km deep. This truly magical place is home to Olduvai Gorge, where the remains of a 1.8 million year old skeleton was discovered. The Ngorongoro Crater and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area are without a doubt some of the most beautiful parts of Tanzania.

You can do an early morning game drive in an open to 4×4, and try and see an early morning kill and see the hippos meandering in to the hippo pool. You have the opportunity to pre-order your breakfast the day before so you can take it in to the crater, or you can come back to the lodge for breakfast. You can also participate in an afternoon game drive to see the lions basking in the sun.

You will descend into the crater through a lush highland forest, with magnificent birdlife to be spotted among the different tree species. Once on the grassy crater floor, you may discover a large variety of grazing herbivores, as well as the predators that are attracted by this abundant supply of prey. Depending on the time of year, you may see huge flocks of pink flamingo around the shores of the shallow Lake Magadi, while the surrounding swamp is inhabited by hippo.

In the company of an experienced guide, learn about the flora as well as the fauna, and begin to understand the true majesty of the indigenous peoples that live and thrive on the land.

Often taken just after dusk, a night game drive at Tarangire Treetops is a rare opportunity to see how the bush ‘comes alive’ after dark (additional charge). After the Serengeti, Tarangire has the greatest concentration of wildlife in Tanzania and in the dry season the Tarangire River is a magnet for thirsty wildlife. Large herds of elephants and migratory wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, impala, gazelle, hartebeest and eland gather and not surprisingly the predators follow. This is also the one place in Tanzania where dry-country antelope such as oryx and gerenuk are regularly spotted. Tarangire is also known for its spectacular baobab trees, and its breathtaking views of the Masaai Steppe and the mountains to the south. Located just a few hours drive from the town of Arusha, Tarangire is a popular stop for safaris travelling through the northern circuit on their way to Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. Day 34

Enjoy two full days of game viewing activities at Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge.

Enjoy morning and afternoon game drives in Serengeti National Park. The central Serengeti consists of the plains woodland border and transition zone. In this area, the great Serengeti plains gradually diffuse into gently rolling hills and the woodland habitat that dominates the western and northern regions of the park. The central Serengeti is home to the beautiful Seronera valley. Several perennial rivers run through this valley enabling many resident animals to thrive year round. The combination of location and resident prey attracts the largest populations of predators in Africa. It is this amazing abundance and diversity of easily seen large predators that attracts thousands of visitors and hundreds of researches to the Seronera river valley each year. There is simply no better place in Africa to observe these large carnivores and since many are resident, excellent encounters are available year round regardless of the season or where the great migratory herds are located. It is not unusual to see all four large predators (lion, hyena, leopard, and cheetah) during the course of a day in the central Serengeti.

The day is at leisure to relax and enjoy a mid-safari break. One of Tanzania’s most developed and fastest growing towns, the bustling ‘Safari Town’ of Arusha is a hive of arrival and departure activity as countless 4WD safari vehicles load up with provisions and set off with their passengers into the endless, game-teeming plains of the mighty Serengeti National Park. Established in 1900 as a minor German military garrison, Arusha lies halfway between the Cape and Cairo and was once a major trading post for the local Waarusha and Wameru tribes.

The markets in the center of town are not to be missed. You can find almost anything at these markets, from food to clothing to little trinkets to take home to friends and family. The batik and silk-screened cloths in bright colors are highly recommended. Also, the Kikoys that the women of Tanzania wear, make wonderful and original wrap skirts. Maasai women artisans make beautiful hand-beaded jewelry that they sell to tourists, frequently to pay for their children’s schooling. If you come across this you should definitely purchase a few items, as they are extremely beautiful and make wonderful, unique gifts. The Maasai market is a one stop shopping area for handicrafts made by local Tanzanians. You get to buy various handicrafts made of ebony, redwood, and various types of paintings made by local artisans.

A typical day starts with a cup of coffee and a light breakfast before heading out in the Land Rover for a game drive. We use the vehicles to get to a predestined area for a walk, or until we cross fresh tracks of something interesting which we can follow on foot; maybe lions, wild dogs, a large herd of buffalo or walk up to some of the big old elephant bulls which Mana is so well known for. After our morning activities we head back to Vundu for lunch, followed by a short siesta. Afternoon tea is followed by canoeing on the river for those who choose to, or another walk/drive. Canoeing is certainly a highlight as it is a unique activity and not many parks offer the opportunity, especially not with the abundance of wildlife as in Mana.

Little Vundu Camp is suited to both those looking for that extra bit of adventure and to those who want a more relaxing time. Our guides have many years experience and you will be well looked after both in the bush and in camp.
