Day 3

Enjoy one full day of game viewing activities at Oliver’s Camp with a private vehicle.

Oliver’s Camp is situated in the remote south-eastern reaches of the Tarangire National Park. This relatively undeveloped park – celebrated by safari travellers looking to head a little off the beaten track – offers a welcome respite from the crowds of the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater to the north. Oliver’s is perfectly situated to ensure a year-round Tanzania safari experience as each passing season paints Tarangire in vibrant new colors.

Morning, afternoon and night game drives are done within the park. Walking safaris are a specialty of Oliver’s Camp. The privilege of walking in these natural areas gives you an exhilarating feeling of adventure. Although you’ll usually get close to large mammals such as elephant, giraffe, buffalo or even lion, walking safaris are very safe. Guests can also book a fly camping experience which is typically booked as part of a walking safari or as an exclusive and private night away from the main camp. This small and intimate lightweight camp is a fantastic experience for those seeking something a little more adventurous (additional cost).

Tarangire boasts large herds of elephant and buffalo, plus a large concentration of big cats and arguably the best bird diversity in East Africa with more than 500 species. But there’s more to Tarangire than the game and birds. This rugged landscape offers a unique safari backdrop that transforms from rolling grasslands and vibrant swamps to forests of enigmatic baobab trees; according to legend, planted ‘upside down’ for growing too tall and proud.

Day 5

Enjoy a full day game drive in the Ngorongoro Crater with a packed lunch.

Descend into the 100-square-mile Ngorongoro Crater to view game on the vast grasslands of the crater floor. This magnificent natural amphitheater is said to have the largest concentration of animals in all of Africa, including a high density of lions and thousands of flamingos. The ever-changing mood of this great amphitheater will hold your attention every second.

Formed by the collapsed cone of a Great Rift Valley volcano some three million years ago, the Ngorongoro Crater is a spectacular natural sanctuary to more than 30,000 animals. More than 350 species of birds have been recorded. Its steep, unbroken rim plunges 2,000 feet to a 102 square mile floor. It is known as the Eighth Wonder of the World.  Its vastness and beauty are truly overwhelming. Many scientists suggest that before its eruption, this volcano was larger than Mt. Kilimanjaro.

The crater contains a variety of ecosystems and an astounding concentration of birds and animals. Encounter massive herds of zebra, wildebeest, and gazelles. This area affords an opportunity to spot the Big Five, which includes African elephant, leopard, the black-mane lion, buffalo, and the rare black rhinoceros.

Day 7

Enjoy one full day of game viewing activities at Namiri Plains Camp.

The Serengeti together with Kenya’s Masai Mara Game Park form Africa’s most famous wildlife park. The image of acacia trees on an endless grass plain epitomizes Africa for many, and then add a Masai warrior and some cattle to the picture and the conversation need go no further.

Namiri Plains, in the remote Eastern corner of the Serengeti, is located in an area that was closed for 20 years to create a safe haven for cheetah. This is big cat country and undoubtedly offers East Africa’s best cheetah viewing opportunities.

Wildlife viewing and bird watching game drives within the central Serengeti are offered twice per day. Experienced guides encourage guests to see and experience the Serengeti through their eyes, sharing a world of small and large wonders that only they truly know, understand and can explain.

Walking is the most intimate way to experience the bush. The pace is easy, your eye-level is that of the wildlife and your senses are more acutely aware of the sights, smells and sounds, from the small things close at hand to the giants at a distance.

Day 9

Enjoy one full day at Olakira Camp.

The Serengeti together with Kenya’s Masai Mara Game Park form Africa’s most famous wildlife park. The image of acacia trees on an endless grass plain epitomizes Africa for many, and then add a Masai warrior and some cattle to the picture and the conversation need go no further.

Tanzania’s famous migration is a restless thing: shifting with the seasons as the great herds of wildebeest wander between Kenya and Tanzania. And moving with them are the Olakira camps… as the migration progresses, so the camp’s luxury tents pick up their feet and follow. In the dry months of winter Olakira Mara River enjoys some of the best views of the herds migrating out of Kenya across the treacherous Mara River. By November, with the herds on the march, Olakira swiftly follows to witness the incredible calving in the great grassy plains of the southern Serengeti.

Wildlife viewing and bird watching game drives are offered twice per day. Experienced guides encourage guests to see and experience the Serengeti through their eyes, sharing a world of small and large wonders that only they truly know and understand. Guests can arrange full days in the bush with picnic lunches at an additional cost.

The annual Serengeti Wildebeest Migration is, quite simply, a drama in two acts: the dramatic dash for freedom as the herds cross the deadly Mara River on their march from Kenya, and the remarkable months of calving in the lush grasslands of the south. And with Olakira Camp itself migrating twice per year, you’ll always have a front-row seat to the action.

Day 11

Enjoy your first day of Gorilla Trekking in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

7:45 am: After breakfast, take a short drive to Park Headquarters and meet with excellent local guides and trackers who will give a talk on the etiquette of gorilla trekking. We then hike into the forest where the gorillas were seen the night before and track from that point.

The trekking can take from 1 to 6 hours and climb to altitudes in excess of 7,500 feet. The terrain is rough and at times muddy. Although the hike is physically demanding the beauty of the forest and surrounding scenery make the trekking worthwhile. Once the gorillas are located all fatigue is forgotten, as the experience is often described as being the most profound natural history experience in the world.

Picnic lunches are provided and it is important to take plenty of water. Cameras and plenty of fast speed film are recommended. It can rain at a few minutes notice; hence waterproof clothing is a good essential including zip lock bags for cameras and film.

After the trek you will be escorted back to the lodge for dinner.

Day 12

Enjoy your second day of Gorilla Trekking in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

7:45 am: With the thrill of yesterday’s trek still fresh in your mind, head out once more in search of these amazing beasts! The second trek offers you enough time to put down the camera and appreciate the whole environment and setting as it unfolds in front of you without a viewfinder in the way. To begin to fully realize the special shared genetic history of our two species. To study and comprehend the social interactions of the family you are visiting.
